Macquarie Learn to Skate
The Learn to Skate Program has been designed for skaters from 4 years of age and all ability levels. Our program and classes encourage students to progress at their own pace.
Classes are conducted during school term in group lessons under the guidance of Macquarie Ice Rink's accredited coaches.
The Learn to Skate curriculum covers the basic skills of ice skating including: balance and gliding safely; forwards and backwards stroking; crossovers and turning.
We offer classes in various discipline including Free Skate, Ice Dance, Synchronised Skating and Speed Skating.
WE RECOMMEND skaters wear a helmet, wrist guards and knee pads for their protection.
By entering the rink, you agree to abide by the Terms and Conditions set forth by the rink.
If you are wishing to rebook after having some time off, you will need to contact us in order to receive a booking link for your class. Please use our Contact Us page or call us on (02) 9888 1100 to inquire.
Please note a late fee will apply if you wish to book into a class after the cut-off date, which is three days prior to the start of class. The late fee will be $29 if you book on the day of your classes and/or after the online booking links expire.
If you try to book in person during the Learn to Skate time, you will be asked to come back the following week, incurring the late fee as well as missing the first week of classes.
No Bookings will be accepted after the third (3rd) week of classes have finished.

For class times please check with the rink. Once students are proficient in the skills required of a particular level, the coach will invite you to proceed to the next skating level.
Monday:evening 7:30pm to 9.30pm Adult classes are for those 14 years +, beginning from Basic Group 1
Thursday evening 5.15pm to 7.15pm and Saturday morning 8.30am to 10:30am Classes are for all ages
Friday 11:30 am for Beginner class only from ages 7+. Aimed to allow those with alternative school schedules and Home School groups to get a start in our Learn to Skate Program. Term 4 2024 will only be Aussie Skate 1 with room for expansion in 2025.
For first time enrollments, the starting levels are as follows:
Monday Evening:
Basic Group 1
Thursday and Saturday:
Tots 1 for ages 4-6 years
Aussie Skate 1 for ages 7 and above
Friday
Aussie Skate 1 for ages 7 and above

Trial Classes are Subject to availability and only open to booking two days before the commencement of the term. These Trial classes can only be booked in person or by phone.

Terms may vary in length due to public holidays or other circumstances, you will be advised upon booking how long the term is. By default from 2025 they are 9 weeks in length however they do vary on occasion, the costs for each term length are as follows:

Trial lesson $40 (available in week 1 only) Please note bookings for trial classes can only be made 1 day prior to the commencement of the class and are dependent on class availability. If you decide to continue for the term the trial lesson fee will come off the total course fee for the term).
Make up lessons can not be done in the last week of term.
The Program includes: weekly:
Weekly admission to lessons
Skate hire
One ½ hour lesson at the same time each week
COMPLIMENTARY two (2) hour practice during any public session. (this is an additional feature given by MIR and not part of the paid course therefore it is not transferrable or refundable).
if using your free practice during the Saturday orSunday Mega session, your entry time will be noted on the card and your card left with the cashier for your collection after you have finished skating. When you collect your card the time will be checked. There will be an allowance of 10 minutes before and after the two (2) hour skate time after which a second practice will be marked off your card.
Please note as this is a free addition to the cost of the courses it is not refundable or transferable if not used.
Refunds are only considered with a Doctor’s Certificate
Two (2) make up classes are available each term in the case you miss your regular class
There will be a late fee of $29 per student booking, if you book after the online links have expired (3 days before start of classes).

Macquarie Ice Rink reserves the right to combine or cancel classes at its discretion depending on enrollment numbers.
No Bookings will be accepted on the day of class. If you turn up to book at the first session, you will be asked to call back another day to start your classes the following week. Please note the late enrollment fee of $29 per student will apply.
A forgotten Card Fee of $10 will be charged for each instance you forget to bring your card. This fee is refundable, simply keep your receipt and the fee will be returned to you when you find your card and bring it in to be marked off.
Lost or misplaced cards will incur a $25 fee, which is non-refundable.
